Les scientifiques ont découvert que les taux d'échappement de l'hydrogène et de l'«hydrogène lourd», appelé deutérium, changent rapidement lorsque Mars est proche du Soleil. Cette découverte bouleverse l'image classique que les scientifiques avaient jusqu'à présent, selon laquelle ces atomes se diffusaient lentement dans l'atmosphère jusqu'à une hauteur où ils pouvaient s'échapper. L'extrapolation du taux d'échappement dans le temps a aidé l'équipe à comprendre l'histoire de l'eau sur la planète rouge.

Voici des images Hubble dans l'ultraviolet lointain de Mars à son point le plus éloigné du Soleil, appelé aphélie, le 31 décembre 2017 (en haut), et à son point le plus proche du Soleil, appelé périhélie, le 19 décembre 2016 (en bas). L'atmosphère est clairement plus lumineuse et plus étendue lorsque Mars est proche du Soleil.

La lumière solaire réfléchie par Mars à ces longueurs d'onde montre la diffusion par les molécules atmosphériques et la brume, tandis que les calottes polaires et certaines caractéristiques de la surface sont également visibles. Hubble et MAVEN de la NASA ont montré que les conditions atmosphériques martiennes changent très rapidement. Lorsque Mars est proche du Soleil, les molécules d'eau s'élèvent très rapidement dans l'atmosphère, se brisant et libérant des atomes à haute altitude.
