@Shiri Bailem The invidious instance you replace youtube urls with is showing a certificate error for me and i have to manually copy the video id of youtube videos and insert them into a youtu.be url. I checked the url on Specrum security shield and it's blocked on my internet so I can't access it without a VPN. If you could change the server or remove url replacing altogether or add a toggle that would be great
@Claire I can't add a toggle, but I can disable it.
I don't have strong feelings about it, so it's not a big deal unless other people revolt (in which case I'll try to find a different invidious server or similar).
URL replacing is still turned on for Instagram (via https://proxigram.lunar.icu) and New York Times (12ft.io)

A couple weeks ago I blocked a reply guy who was persistently hounding me to edit a years-old blog post of mine to fix what he regarded as "grave errors".

well you have in a way - the "block" button is a great example of something that's technically simple but a sociological minefield. It is the equivalent of passing by someone on the street trying to talk to you, and not even making eye contact

Yup. I know of a half-dozen cases in which I’ve been blocked, and l don’t sweat any of them—because I don’t feel entitled to their time and attention. If they don’t want to interact with me, I don’t need to interact with them.

the thing about the 'bubble' nonsense is the human mind is evolved to comfortably manage real relationships with about 150 people. A small village. You don't get better quality interactions by trying to relate fully to all 8 billion other people on the planet. You HAVE to edit your experience to function properly. They is nothing wrong with editing out people who only want to interact in bad faith anyway. That's not living in a bubble; it's just sensible.

my rule that I have to keep reminding myself is "if blocking this person would improve my timeline/notifications then block away." No point getting sucked into arguments when the other person is posting Time Cube or equivalent.

@fivetonsflax I mute people all the time that show up in hashtags I subscribe to and who seem like perfectly nice people that post stuff I'm just not interested in seeing. There really is no bad reason to mute or block people. Being able to curate your social media experience is a part of how we can be online and stay sane.
@bcdavid @fivetonsflax Exactly. If someone decides to block or mute or whatever private nonviolent thing they want to do with what gets displayed in their feed, that's fine. If they block people who disagrees with them, that's fine. It doesn't stop the blocked people from being heard by everyone else.
I have been on a super block party for the last month... Lots of foreign actors want to stir the bucket. I don't answer them and it doesn't bother me one bit to block.
It's not a bad thing to block people in cases like yours. I try to reserve blocking for the truly deserving because I don't want to live in an echo chamber.
Thats what I do too. I like good discussions but when someone starts trying to impose their beliefs on a topic in a forceful way it's time to take them out of the loop. I love my feed and it's full of really cool people too When you block here, they will never see you again.

I mute a lot of businesses (except craft people) and posts in a language I dont understand, just to free up my feed, I know I'm probably missing out on good people that way.
@Sfwmson Blocking: they can’t reply to your reply after the block, and they can’t see your posts nor you theirs.
Muting: they can reply, and you can reply to them if you navigate to their comments on their profile, but in general use you stop seeing their posts but they can see yours.
@WhiteCatTamer @Sfwmson Don’t you think this is preferable in most cases? Blocking means, not only that you won’t have to see the blocked one, but also that they won’t see your viewpoints and ideas. If you mute them for being annoying or whatever, you could still influence them without knowing they exist.

@WhiteCatTamer @Sfwmson For your ideas and thoughts to spread further and for the muted one to be exposed to new ideas and thoughts. The only thing extra a block accomplishes, is the blocked one is getting an echo chamber built for them involuntarily by others, unless I’m missing some other distinction between blocking and muting.

Also if someone is abusive, and they reply to your posts, then people replying to you will have to read their negativity.
Plus they can harass people replying in your threads, or people you boost. If muted, you have enabled that connection, even if you can't see it happening.
So rather than look the other way and subject my friends to abuse, I block harmful people.
But if it's topics I'm just not interested in, then I will filter or mute.

Of course you are welcome to manage your own feed and block by whatever criteria you want.
That said, I do think that in a medium designed for multi-party communication rather than monologue, those (not you) who choose to block everyone who politely disagrees with them on a topic where multiple reasonable views exist are being jerks, to put it politely. They have a right to do so, but they are not in the right.
Blocking is a gift to all parties. The blocker gets to be free of hassle and the person being blocked is given the help they need to be free of something that bothers them but they lack the personal willpower to just ignore.
My main complaint with blocks is that it makes making amends impossible. You can't contact the blocker to know what did you do wrong, you lose access to potentially important information irrevocably, and it ends up being a lifelong stain on your reputation (you must have done something unforgivable to be permabanned from somebody's feed). And don't get me started with recursive bans!
That's understandable, but if I have no idea of what caused the annoyance, I will eventually end up banned from the entirety of the web with no recourse to ask what did I do wrong. At the very least I would expect a distributed method to request a moderator to review my ban, and explain which rule did I violate.
It can be argued simultaneously that there should be social pressure to tolerate differences in communication norms, personality, and identity while also being the case that blocking need not be justified ("no is a complete sentence"). I expect people lacking emotional health and insight will use blocks inappropriately regardless of the principles their culture adopts so there is probably little to gain by engaging with the ad nauseam re-litigation of said principles.
I like to use the mute function on the really irritating ones. Block tells them I've blocked them. Muting means they think I might be ignoring them, but might say something back and the mean bastard in me just loves that.
And that's why I avoid interacting with anyone like the plague. The only guaranteed way not to annoy anyone (and not risk being punished with losing access to public information you might require to inform yourself) is to not be detectable at all by never interacting. (Unless that person has imposed you some obligation, of course)
In hopes this is useful: The main reason I choose to minimize blocking is I find it allows me to monitor the crazy but still ignore it. Ignoring seems to afford less ‘reward’ for them than letting them say you blocked them.
Totally legit approach! I wasn’t trying to proscribe, just mentioning the upsides to me. I like knowing what I’m up against, how far they’re going. Sometimes (platform depending) I do get them banned.
This is also why I set my feed to delete my tweets every two weeks. Has the benefit of 1) freeing up space on my instance's servers; and 2) avoiding nutjobs like that guy.
The mindset saying "preventing me from talking to you is wrong" has core concepts in common with the Muskbros insisting that not signing up for twitter is "censorship" and even the arch-evangelicals screaming about others' gender and sexual preferences.
