Redbox, the DVD rental company, hasn’t paid employees in over a week and owes money to the big Hollywood studios and beyond.Janko Roettgers (The Verge)
Stop doing CAPSLOCK keys
Keyboards were not meant to have a huge button that makes you accidentally shout on the Internet.
Years of CAPSLOCK yet no real world use found for accidentally bumping the key and failing to enter your passwords correctly.
"The average user might use a legacy application from 1994 that only accepts input in upper case" statements dreamed up by the utterly deranged.
They have played us for utter fools.

The invidious instance you replace youtube urls with is showing a certificate error for me and i have to manually copy the video id of youtube videos and insert them into a youtu.be url. I checked the url on Specrum security shield and it's blocked on my internet so I can't access it without a VPN. If you could change the server or remove url replacing altogether or add a toggle that would be great

@Claire I can't add a toggle, but I can disable it.
I don't have strong feelings about it, so it's not a big deal unless other people revolt (in which case I'll try to find a different invidious server or similar).
URL replacing is still turned on for Instagram (via https://proxigram.lunar.icu) and New York Times (12ft.io)

A couple weeks ago I blocked a reply guy who was persistently hounding me to edit a years-old blog post of mine to fix what he regarded as "grave errors".
It's like he never existed. I'm sure he's complaining about me, but it doesn't matter, because he no longer exists.
People try to tell you it's somehow "bad" to block, but you get to curate your own feed however you want. Don't be shy.

Now people are telling me when it is (and isn't) "OK" to block.
No. My feed, my rules. I'll block whenever I feel like it. You can do the same thing. It's fine.

"But you'll live in a bubble".
I'm willing to accept the risk that I'll live in a world where I'm ignorant of whatever nutso idea you're selling.

with apologies to my server for the increased work I create for it, I block all the time, even preemptively. If I get weird vibes from your post on subject A, I really don't want to see it on B.
I hope folks do the same for whatever nonsense I post, as is everyone's right.
interesting to see the thought process here go from ‘removing anti-social behaviors from my view’ equates to ‘completely shutting out entire swathes of humanity’.
These people really do have main character syndrome, where they think their behavior is normal and widespread. The bubble you make by blocking is called ‘polite society’ and I’ll stay in that bubble always.

I find the bubble argument curious.
Humans have always lived in bubbles. For the vast majority of our history we’ve been entirely unaware of anything happening more than a few miles away from us.
Who decided it was virtuous to use technology to make sure we’re acutely aware of all 8 billion viewpoints at all times?

that person still exists though. They vote. Fox news and friends feeds on them. They metastasize. I get that your Mr fancy pants and you engage with cool and powerful people but a bunch of idiots you blocked will vote for Trump. Then what?
Edit: btw I understand the challenges you will face, just saying the technical solution may not be ideal. Forums tend to have temporary bans like 24 hours or a week. Generally fixes most issues.
This. I'm perfectly happy to never interact with certain people or those with certain views. Why would I want to?
Block block blockity block. Or not. My timeline. My mental health.

Ohh fuck these people that think you have to allow unfettered hateful or batshit opinions and people into your life to appear "balanced".
It's the same fucking civility game the Right play when they want their noxious bullshit legitimised.
I will happily live in a "Bubble" of decency and kindness and respect for wonderful humans and everything else can fuck off into the sun. If I ever need that shit I know which sewers to visit.
@kennykravitz No one has the right to your attention. You are under no obligation to engage with, listen to, or even be aware of every tiresome crackpot idea on earth.
"You'll live in a bubble/echo chamber" is a bullying tactic to guilt you into wasting your time.

I curate my feed fairly tightly, consume hardly any large-platform media, and don’t use any social networks outside of the Fediverse.
In spite of these (tremendous!) efforts, I still very much exist in a world where the people who seem committed to the same values as I am are a tiny minority of those with whom I interact. I would fucking LOVE a bubble please.
Statements like this pretend other websites and the real world doesn't exist. One can learn about hairbrained ideas without having to actually deal with the hairbrained.
It also pretends that we don't have a set of IRL blocking options.
It pretends that if you and your friends are having a chat in a public park, and some dork decides to invite himself to the conversation as critic, the "normal and polite" thing everyone does, is OF course let this rando hijack your conversation and berate you for the next hour! You wouldn't instead tell him to "fuck off" and everyone ignore him, changing the conversation until he goes away, or just moving your party elsewhere.
block early, block often.
I have almost no trouble with reply bullshit in my feeds because I block for any reason or no reason.
You too, huh? Yeah, I've had the need to wipe the dust off that button more than once this past week.
Kinda sucks, but oh well. You nailed it: my feed, my rules.
Jesus. I can't imagine letting anyone get anywhere near that point. You must be very patient.
I block people if they are boring, or if they want to argue with me and I don't like them enough to care about changing their mind.
Lots of foreign actors want to stir the bucket.
I don't answer them and it doesn't bother me one bit to block.
I love my feed and it's full of really cool people too
When you block here, they will never see you again.
Is there a difference between blocking and muting here?
I mute a lot of businesses (except craft people) and posts in a language I dont understand, just to free up my feed, I know I'm probably missing out on good people that way.
@Sfwmson Blocking: they can’t reply to your reply after the block, and they can’t see your posts nor you theirs.
Muting: they can reply, and you can reply to them if you navigate to their comments on their profile, but in general use you stop seeing their posts but they can see yours.

Also if someone is abusive, and they reply to your posts, then people replying to you will have to read their negativity.
Plus they can harass people replying in your threads, or people you boost. If muted, you have enabled that connection, even if you can't see it happening.
So rather than look the other way and subject my friends to abuse, I block harmful people.
But if it's topics I'm just not interested in, then I will filter or mute.
In that situation, yes
but I also have had people block me for asking a honest clarifying question, like they are creating a bubble for themselves of people who only praise them
Of course you are welcome to manage your own feed and block by whatever criteria you want.
That said, I do think that in a medium designed for multi-party communication rather than monologue, those (not you) who choose to block everyone who politely disagrees with them on a topic where multiple reasonable views exist are being jerks, to put it politely. They have a right to do so, but they are not in the right.

@csolisr I'm not blocking people to punish them. I'm blocking them to protect myself from annoyance (or, occasionally, worse).
No one is entitled to unwanted access to other people.
I block.
Live in a bubble? Let's be honest, social media platforms are bubbles!
Blocking made FB tolerable for me.
The subtlety many are missing is that blocking is not a punishment. When someone tells me they blocked me, I thank them.
The best thing that can happen is a jerk blocking me. Their non-response will save me from interacting with them.
The second best thing that can happen is a great person blocking me for a good reason. Their block will save me from embarrassing myself.
At worst nobody loses, apart from losing a poor/mediocre audience because there's always a better audience.
