Totally forgot to publish an #introduction from here, so here goes!
I'm @kfh@chaos.social and I like messing with technology.
This Mastodon instance got spun up in reaction to @domi's crazy project of using an IPv6 reverse address as fedi domain, and me asking myself "can the same be done for v4?"
Well, it turns out that you can twist the fabric of the internet in a way that makes this cursed concoction actually work!
So here we are, in-addr.arpa fedi instance :D

Reminder: Just because someone is posting on social media a lot, visibly doing projects, and otherwise looks like they're living their best life
1) Does not mean they are ok - social media is often a distraction and an escape valve
2) Does not mean they are ignoring you - they may be overwhelmed and incapable of handling messages

PSA: CatCatNya~, as an instance, is currently involved in a potential legal case regarding Austrian StGB § 107c (essentially Cyberbullying), as well as (the former had been dropped, but was reinstated) German StGB § 187 (Verleumdung) against the natural person (Jeremy Kescher) hosting it.
As a precaution, assume the following can happen:
- The instance may disappear in the future (it will remain until legal proceedings end, unless forced otherwise by circumstances)
- The instance may change ownership in the future
- The natural person hosting the instance may be legally forced to hand over data of the instance, as evidence
This is an early warning. However, migrating away, downloading your archive, and then deleting your account may not be a bad idea. Data seizure has become unlikely at this point, so migrating away is, in my opinion, not something I suggest anymore.
Still, this depends entirely on your threat model.

According to all known laws of DNS, there is no way a fedi instance could be hosted on an .ARPA domain.
Even if you get ahold of a domain like this, it should only be used for PTR records - right?
The instance, of course, federates anyway - because DNS doesn't care what humans think is impossible.

OpenAI says it has evidence DeepSeek used its model to train competitor
But OpenAI's products are just out there on the internet for anyone to use. What's the problem? Surely using publicly available resources for the good of humanity is more important than annoying things like "intellectual property", no?

Hey everyone,
I’m micr0, the person behind Altbot, the open-source bot that helps generate alt-text for images, videos, and audio on the Fediverse. Right now, Altbot uses Google Gemini to generate the alt-text, but that means your data goes through Google’s servers and could be used for training their machine learning models.
To fix this and ensure total privacy, I’m looking to move Altbot to a local model that will run completely on my own hardware. This way, your data won’t be saved, shared, or used anywhere else—it’ll stay private and only temporarily be on my hardware.
It’s a big goal, but one that’s been on my mind since the very beginning. I’ve been talking about this shift for a while, and it’s time to make it happen. Plus, if I reach the goal, Altbot will be running on 48% renewable energy, which means less environmental impact and more sustainability.
To make this happen, I need to raise $1,800–$2,000 USD to buy server-grade hardware—things like GPUs for model processing, a solid motherboard, power supply, storage, and cooling. With this setup, I’ll be able to run Altbot privately, efficiently, and sustainably.
I’ve also posted a breakdown of the planned server specs and spending as a reply to this post if you’re curious about the details!
If this sounds like something you want to support, any help would be appreciated! Every little bit gets me closer to the goal. You can donate here: Ko-fi Link.
Thanks so much for supporting Altbot and helping make the Fediverse a better place!

What kind of local model are you planning to run? I'm thinking of doing similar things, and curious about which models are considered good enough for this purpose.
On the frugal end, there are tiny visual models like Florence-2 and SmolVLM that are in principle suitable for generating alt-text for images and that can be run on something like a Raspberry Pi 5 8GB, no GPU needed (though may be too slow for your throughput demands).

Recently, Altbot has been targeted by DDoS attacks. While the motive is unclear, it seems tied to a misguided belief that the bot’s alt-text generation is harmful to the environment. Let me set the record straight.
Altbot uses Gemini-1.5-flash, a specifically low-power AI model. Processing a single alt-text request consumes around 0.0005 kWh, meaning that in the 4 months since I created Altbot—and tens of thousands of alt-text entries generated—it has consumed roughly 10 kWh in total. That’s about the same energy as running a single LED light bulb nonstop for 41 days or driving an electric car just 40 miles.
These DDoS attacks, however, have already consumed more electricity and computing power than Altbot has across its entire existence... in a matter of hours. This means the attacks have caused more environmental harm than the very thing they seem to be protesting.
Altbot exists to improve accessibility on Mastodon, not to harm the environment. Accessibility and sustainability can coexist, and I’m committed to keeping Altbot energy-efficient and purposeful.
If there are concerns, I encourage constructive dialogue—not destructive actions that undermine both inclusivity and sustainability.
Thank you to everyone supporting Altbot’s mission of making the Fediverse more accessible for all.

hi everyone. i need y'all's help.
yesterday (dec 30th) i was kicked out of my parents' apartment, being left with the option to stay at their home under abusive conditions (20km away from the city, no meds).
i have somewhere to stay at for now, but since i'm unemployed, and need quite a bit to cover, financial help would be heavily appreciated.
if someone also is hiring/knows someone who is, around software dev ideally, let me know.
my ko-fi is ko-fi.com/nixgoat. thank you. #mutualaid

at what time will the security release be published? i'd like to upgrade ASAP, since i run my own instance (this one!), and i'd love to be able to plan accordingly.
also, is this major enough that it's worth just shutting down my instance until i patch it? or is the impact minimal on single-user instances like my own?
cc @terrain@tech.lgbt (my other account; so i can potentially keep up with this in case i do decide to just shut down my instance out of caution)

This is an experiment. Please boost.
Here's the idea: This post is going first to my followers, then, if they boost it, to other people. This domain has been registered for only this experiment. I should see in my web server's logs when mastodon instances start crawling the site for info. Then maybe also some curious humans.
I just want to play with my monitoring a bit :)

I might have mentioned several times that all logs will disappear in 15 days. Well, it's been 10 days, so I spent a good part of the morning trying to save the record. The apache logs was easy: made a semi-permanent copy on my desktop. #Mastodon record was more difficult. In the end I managed with the `mastodon.py` client and disabling 2FA, but boy was this a ride...
