@griotspeak from what I can tell about where it’s being stocked, and how much it seems to be selling, I think that it will be around for at least a few more years. I don’t know how much longer beyond that. Cue always had some significant problems and was focusing on buy-in from Silicon Valley companies to test their employees and when that dried up it seemed they didn’t have any other good business model. In the video, we can see several people sitting near what appears to be a cliff. Suddenly, a girl starts running and pointing towards the sky. As the camera pans up to the bright sky, the moon and another object are visible. Within seconds, the mysterious object vanishes from sight.
The ‘Pubity’ account shared the video on Instagram. The video quickly went viral and received more than 467k likes in just a few hours of being published.

I typically agree with the EFF, but my amateur attempt at reading it has me thinking that it: does not prevent kids from searching for stuff, does not mandate age verification, and doesn't apply to small social networks or any network not run by a for-profit corporation. @Jarska96 anti-monopoly law should apply as well.. I'm old enough to remember "refill shops" you could take an empty cartridge and have it cheaply re-filled with ink. All gone now.. also the extra computer chips/software embedded in each cartridge to "detect" (and reject) any generic/re-filled hp cartridge is wasteful and definitely monopolistic/anti-competitive in nature..

Back in 1997, when organised trans activism was a new thing, it was incredibly hard to get famously-shy trans people to stand together on the street. And afterwards the brave few would melt away into the crowd. It seems to me that the big unintended consequence of right wing attempts to crush us has been to unify us and bring trans folk out in our tens of thousands to say “No!”. Never back a minority into a corner with survival and freedom at stake. You create the thing you fear the most.

At its simplest, a living wage is what one full-time worker must earn on an hourly basis to help cover the cost of their family’s minimum basic needs where they live while still being self-sufficient.
This seems, to me, the only useful metric for judging whether a job pays you enough. In order to be free to pursue your own path you need to be financially independent.
The living wage trend climbs quickly after California and gets fairly linear after that. My guess is this has to do a lot with the industries in the states. California and NY have large sectors with high-wage white collar work, North Dakota has major extractive industries, and I assume Minnesota and Wisconsin benefit from still have major manufacturing.
I went a bit further to see if Unions played a role in the difference between states and it turns out that yes, it seems to, but the effect is small in their current form. My guess is this has more to do with the relative strength of unions as a whole rather than the ineffectiveness of unions as a concept. I would find it interesting to see this broken down by occupation, and whether unions with more striking power are more effective.

Not sure how many who follow me here are receptive to this message but: covid is surging rn across the US. If you haven’t been wearing a mask, please start. It’ll help break transmission chains & make it less likely your actions disable or kill someone. It’ll also protect you, of course. 3M Auras are an N95 you can get at most Home Depots. They’re very effective. If you prefer black they also sell BNX N95s in black. I’m not a fan of Home Depot but it’s ubiquitous so I’m using it as an example.
If you have legit questions about where to get masks or what kind to get I’ll do my best to answer. I’m also hearing a lot of folks saying they have all the symptoms but are testing negative on RATs. I highly recommend investing in a unit like Metrix (home test more like PCR) that is more accurate. But if you have symptoms tbh you almost certainly have it regardless of testing negative on RATs. Mask to heal yourself and protect others.
And if anyone is encountering this & thinking “eh, it’s just a cold,” I understand that the US govt has done a good job of putting out that message, but most doctors and researchers that have been paying attention have shown again and again that covid worsens overall health long term, causes strokes, heart attacks, & diabetes to name just a few, & is even oncogenic. It also causes a variety of nonfatal chronic illnesses & disorders that can cause you to be unable to work, sometimes permanently.
In other words, your body does not treated as just a cold, and it doesn’t clear it as though it’s just a minor cold. It really is much more serious than that. And a lot of people don’t find out until it’s too late and either they or someone they love is permanently disabled or dies. Please do what you can to limit the spread, we’re in a situation where cancer patients, babies, and immunocompromised people can’t even get healthcare safely due to all the spread.
Honestly probably the hardest part of all of this for me is that every cold, allergies, flu, sinus infection, stomach bug feels like it could be COVID and I can neither hold down my pre-schooler and force a swab in her nose every time she sneezes nor can I wear an N95 in my house all day every day.
So there's just a constant mid-level anxiety that I can't talk about because "COVID is over" and I "am overreacting."
@q_aurelius that’s really rough I’m sure. If it helps the metrix testing system can be done with spit, doesn’t require a swab, so perhaps good for a kid.
My recommendation to those concerned for themselves and others is to get vaccinated with the latest Covid booster and flu vaxx, mask up in public places like airports, hospitals, medical offices, concerts, etc. Observe social distancing wherever possible. Wash your hands often and use hand sanitizer in public places. Eat a healthy diet, exercise if you can. Stay hydrated. Be respectful of others who may be immunocompromised.

@BioGeek23 it’s because people rebreathe their own exhalations to a great extent. But a mask traps viral particles on the way OUT of you, as well as on the way in. So you are actually cleaning the air you’re breathing and not rebreathing as much virus when you wear an N95 or KN95. A recent study discussed how this lessens disease length and severity. If I remember the link I’ll post it.

Most have avoided Covid the past four years. * one first-timer is a 6th grade school teacher on summer vacation. The only Place she went was a quick run into Home Depot to buy paint off the shelf for a project.
Metrix isn’t available in Canada and doesn’t ship from the US. Only available tests are expired low-quality RATs. Where I live there is no Paxlovid access (not permitted under age 80 and then only for people in care); boosters are permitted only in fall, so-called “respiratory season,” unless aged over 60 (55 if Indigenous.) I live with a young adult whose customer service employment depends on working unmasked. She has had Covid 3 times.
@seachanger Also, it can take a while to test positive. The only time I had Covid, my husband had it for a full week before I tested positive. IOW, I started feeling sick the same time he did, but he got hit harder, and he was immediately positive on both a RAT and PCR. (1/2)
Conversely, I spent a week feeling somewhat ill (sore throat, headache, lethargic, etc.), but tested negative on an RAT *every day,* for seven days. Just as my husband started to feel a little better, I suddenly got much worse, and tested positive 8 days in. (And then for 10 more days.)
IMO, testing once on an RAT is not trustworthy. Assume you have it, and keep testing. (2/2)

It’s a jaded attitude but I don’t think that makes it untrue and I don’t really want to spend my entire life obsessively focused on something that I can only marginally control. aaaand…. It takes everyone masking. I went to a conference in February 2022, masked the whole time, came home with Covid. I haven’t worked since then — too disabled by fatigue and cognitive problems. I was an English professor. I’ve published two books and a dozen or so articles. Now I have trouble with words.

This is the story of my Jewish mother, Rakefet, a survivor of the October 7th Massacre from on the Southern Kibbutzim. She is an Israeli Jew, daughter of parents who escaped the Farhud in Iraq and this post is for her 64th birthday!
My mom, shaking on the phone, had been speaking to me throughout the days of October 7th and October 8th, until the IDF finally arrived for the rescue. Those days traumatised her, and she had been struggling since. I had been back and forth between living with her and living in the UK at the time, was just looking at flights for that day in the days leading into it, but something just felt like I shouldn't fly it, it was hard to explain that feeling but I now I know what that intuition was. I've come to Israel soon after. On that day she kept saying "everything is ok don't worry", even at her most fearful, she thought of my own mental health and tried to calm me down. But I knew from her voice that nothing was okay at all. On October 7th, Hamas terrorists tried to infiltrate their Kibbutz, there were gun fights for a while at the gate, my parents hearing the gun shots and bombs meters away from them, but then one Israeli man wore IDF uniform he had in his home and went out to fight Hamas and they just ran away - they thought it meant IDF was already there when they had been hours away, and the terrorists had committed the massacre on both Kibbutzim surrounding my family's house including 14 dead at the gas station right outside of their Kibbutz. Luckily, they were rescued, but many of our loved ones had died that day and parts of us did too, and the reality of being under thousands of rockets and left in uncertainty hearing and seeing on TV and through friends in texts the images of the massacre, videos of rapes and all forms of unimaginable brutality happening minutes away from them, had left a mark of PTSD on her with daily struggles. But, my mother is capable of healing. She has this trait of wonder, of finding hope in impossible situations and creating poetry out of it. I'm working on translating her Hebrew poems to English, but also I thought, if jewelry making is so therapeutic for me, maybe that could help her heal as well? The act of beading and designing is a beautiful mix of unique creativity and self expression at one part, followed by a repetitive meditative part in every necklace, so I gave her many of my materials (I have an active small business) and taught her how to bead. My father, who teaches architecture and design, supports her and teaches her how to do aesthetic and beautiful designs in harmony. I thought she'll get bored of it in a a few days, but to my joy and surprise she had never stopped! For the past few months while still in temporary accommodation, unable to return to her home since the attack, she made a stock of at least 70 necklaces! And she keeps asking me, "do you really think anyone would ever find my works good enough to own? I think I would be unfathomably happy if they would." And I always say while I can't promise anything, I believe it's possible, her designs are heartfelt and so sweet and beautiful. It's my birthday gift for her: I sent her loads of new jewelry making materials, photographed and uploaded her works to Etsy!!! I layered her necklaces and added my handmade earrings, photographed and uploaded listings to her own Etsy shop. Those are pretty low cost, because she cares less about how much earnings there will be and just wants the joy of making and sending her works away, the more, the happier she'll be, it's so fulfilling to create healing art and send it away to a loving home. All carefully made by my mom in Israel with Israeli shells, Amethyst, Garnet and Agate gemstones. I only got to photograph the Amethyst purple gem creations but there are lots of green, pink, red and blue creations, let me know if you're interested! And she also makes jewelry with the Hostages dog tags. All her creations are at a low cost ($20 to $50), they are worth more but she just needs to see it's possible and get her first sales.
