Rien ne permet d'affirmer que cette citation est bien du Mahatma Gandhi car elle n'est jamais sourcée. Le plus ancien ouvrage qui l'attribue à Gandhi date de 1960:

Il est difficile de retrouver l'origine de ces paroles. Elles ont souvent été vues comme un proverbe. Mais les deux phrases semblent avoir des origines différentes. La première phrase pourrait venir d'Héraclide de Lembos (IIe siècle av. J. -C.).
On peut aussi attribuer cette citation au philosophe de l'antiquité Bias de Priène (VIe siècle av. J. -C.) ou à l'auteur de "L'Imitation de Jésus" (du XIVe siècle).
