The basis of the relations of production under the slave system is that the slave-owner owns the means of production, he also owns the worker in production – the slave, whom he can sell, purchase, or kill as though he were an animal. Such relations of production in the main correspond to the state of the productive forces of that period. Instead of stone tools, men now have metal tools at their command; instead of the wretched and primitive husbandry of the hunter, who knew neither pasturage nor tillage, there now appear pasturage tillage, handicrafts, and a division of labor between these branches of production. There appears the possibility of the exchange of products between individuals and between societies, of the accumulation of wealth in the hands of a few, the actual accumulation of the means of production in the hands of a minority, and the possibility of subjugation of the majority by a minority and the conversion of the majority into slaves. Here we no longer find the common and free labor of all members of society in the production process – here there prevails the forced labor of slaves, who are exploited by the non-laboring slave-owners. Here, therefore, there is no common ownership of the means of production or of the fruits of production. It is replaced by private ownership. Here the slaveowner appears as the prime and principal property owner in the full sense of the term. Rich and poor, exploiters and exploited, people with full rights and people with no rights, and a fierce class struggle between them – such is the picture of the slave system. The basis of the relations of production under the feudal system is that the feudal lord owns the means of production and does not fully own the worker in production – the serf, whom the feudal lord can no longer kill, but whom he can buy and sell. Alongside of feudal ownership there exists individual ownership by the peasant and the handicraftsman of his implements of production and his private enterprise based on his personal labor. Such relations of production in the main correspond to the state of the productive forces of that period. Further improvements in the smelting and working of iron; the spread of the iron plow and the loom; the further development of agriculture, horticulture, viniculture and dairying; the appearance of manufactories alongside of the handicraft workshops – such are the characteristic features of the state of the productive forces. The new productive forces demand that the laborer shall display some kind of initiative in production and an inclination for work, an interest in work. The feudal lord therefore discards the slave, as a laborer who has no interest in work and is entirely without initiative, and prefers to deal with the serf, who has his own husbandry, implements of production, and a certain interest in work essential for the cultivation of the land and for the payment in kind of a part of his harvest to the feudal lord. Here private ownership is further developed. Exploitation is nearly as severe as it was under slavery – it is only slightly mitigated. A class struggle between exploiters and exploited is the principal feature of the feudal system. The basis of the relations of production under the capitalist system is that the capitalist owns the means of production, but not the workers in production – the wage laborers, whom the capitalist can neither kill nor sell because they are personally free, but who are deprived of means of production and) in order not to die of hunger, are obliged to sell their labor power to the capitalist and to bear the yoke of exploitation. Alongside of capitalist property in the means of production, we find, at first on a wide scale, private property of the peasants and handicraftsmen in the means of production, these peasants and handicraftsmen no longer being serfs, and their private property being based on personal labor. In place of the handicraft workshops and manufactories there appear huge mills and factories equipped with machinery. Therefore, the capitalists prefer to deal with wage-workers, who are free from the bonds of serfdom and who are educated enough to be able properly to operate machinery. But having developed productive forces to a tremendous extent, capitalism has become enmeshed in contradictions which it is unable to solve. By producing larger and larger quantities of commodities, and reducing their prices, capitalism intensifies competition, ruins the mass of small and medium private owners, converts them into proletarians and reduces their purchasing power, with the result that it becomes impossible to dispose of the commodities produced. On the other hand, by expanding production and concentrating millions of workers in huge mills and factories, capitalism lends the process of production a social character and thus undermines its own foundation, inasmuch as the social character of the process of production demands the social ownership of the means of production; yet the means of production remain private capitalist property, which is incompatible with the social character of the process of production. These irreconcilable contradictions between the character of the productive forces and the relations of production make themselves felt in periodical crises of over-production, when the capitalists, finding no effective demand for their goods owing to the ruin of the mass of the population which they themselves have brought about, are compelled to burn products, destroy manufactured goods, suspend production, and destroy productive forces at a time when millions of people are forced to suffer unemployment and starvation, not because there are not enough goods, but because there is an overproduction of goods. This means that the capitalist relations of production have ceased to correspond to the state of productive forces of society and have come into irreconcilable contradiction with them. This means that capitalism is pregnant with revolution, whose mission it is to replace the existing capitalist ownership of the means of production by socialist ownership. This means that the main feature of the capitalist system is a most acute class struggle between the exploiters and the exploited. The basis of the relations of production under the socialist system, which so far has been established only in the U.S.S.R., is the social ownership of the means of production. Here there are no longer exploiters and exploited. The goods produced are distributed according to labor performed, on the principle: "He who does not work, neither shall he eat." Here the mutual relations of people in the process of production are marked by comradely cooperation and the socialist mutual assistance of workers who are free from exploitation. Henri-Pierre Picou
Henri-Pierre Picou (Nantes 27 février 1824 - 17 juillet 1895) est un peintre français. Son œuvre commence par des portraits et des sujets historiques classiques, mais il passe ensuite à des thèmes allégoriques et mythologiques.
Peintre académique, il est l'un des fondateurs de l'école néo-gréco, avec ses amis Gustave Boulanger, Jean-Léon Gérôme et Jean-Louis Hamon, également peintres académiques. Tous ont étudié dans les ateliers de Paul Delaroche et plus tard de Charles Gleyre. Le style de Picou est nettement influencé par Gleyre. Charles West Cope
Charles West Cope (28 juillet 1811, à Leeds - 21 août 1890, à Bournemouth) était un peintre anglais de l'ère victorienne, spécialisé dans les scènes de genre et d'histoire, ainsi qu'un graveur. Il a peint plusieurs fresques à la Chambre des Lords à Londres.
Cope est né à Park Square à Leeds, fils de Charles Cope, peintre de paysages à l'aquarelle et professeur d'art. Il reçoit le prénom «West», d'après celui d'un peintre célèbre, Benjamin West, et sa sœur unique Ellen, le deuxième prénom «Turner», d'après J. M. W. Turner - les deux peintres étant des amis de son père. Sa mère, une artiste aquarelliste «amateur douée», est décédée peu après la naissance de Charles.
Enfant, Charles est envoyé dans un pensionnat à Camberwell, à Londres, puis à «l'école de Terry» (sic) à Great Marlow, où il est victime de brimades et se casse le coude, ce qui le laisse avec un bras tordu à vie. Il est ensuite allé à la Leeds Grammar School, où il a souffert des attentions d'un professeur cruel.
En 1827, le père de Cope est tué dans un accident de diligence. La même année, il entre à la Sass's Academy de Bloomsbury, à Londres, et en 1828, il devient élève de la Royal Academy. Il obtient une médaille d'argent de la Society of Arts en 1829, une deuxième médaille à la Royal Academy Life School, et donc une bourse d'étudiant à vie. Pendant son séjour à Sass, il se lie d'une amitié durable avec Francis Cary et Charles Stonhouse. Vers 1830, il loge dans Great Russell Street, à Bloomsbury, près du British Museum.
En 1832, Cope se rend à Paris et exerce son art en copiant les vieux maîtres du Louvre, tels que Titien, Rembrandt et d'autres. En 1833, il expose pour la première fois à la Royal Academy - un tableau intitulé L'âge d'or. En septembre de la même année, il se rend en Italie, où il passe deux ans, gagnant sa vie en partie en peignant des tableaux sur commande. Son tableau Le premier-né est achevé à Florence et exposé à la British Institution.
De retour en Angleterre, Cope loge dans Newman Street, à Londres, puis s'installe au 1 Russell Place, où son propriétaire et sa famille deviennent ses modèles. C'est là qu'il peint Paolo et Franceses et Osteria di Campagna, qui sont exposés à la Royal Academy en 1837 et 1838 respectivement, et vendus peu après pour une somme considérable. En 1839-1840, il peint un grand retable (16 pieds sur 10) pour l'église St George, à Leeds, qui est exposé à la Royal Academy en 1840.
Cope fonde une société d'artistes appelée « The Etching Club » qui comprend des artistes tels que William Holman Hunt, Richard Redgrave et Samuel Palmer. En 1844, il soumet un autre dessin intitulé «Rencontre de Jacob et Rachel» et fait partie des six peintres chargés en juillet de la même année de préparer des dessins préliminaires, des esquisses en couleur et des spécimens de peinture à fresque pour la décoration de la Chambre des Lords. Il reçoit également 400 livres pour son dessin du Prince Henry reconnaissant l'autorité du juge Gascoigne. Cope reçut la commande d'exécuter ce dessin en fresque, ainsi qu'un autre représentant Édouard le Prince Noir recevant l'Ordre de la Jarretière. Ces commandes, ainsi que d'autres, ont amené Cope à peindre des fresques à la Chambre des Lords pendant plusieurs années. Il est également élu associé de la Royal Academy (ARA) en 1843.
En 1848, il devient académicien royal (RA) après avoir exposé une grande œuvre intitulée Cardinal Wolsey's Reception at Leicester Abbey (Réception du cardinal Wolsey à l'abbaye de Leicester). Cette année-là, il travaille sur les fresques de Griselda et Lara sur le mur de la salle d'attente supérieure de la Chambre des Lords. Il rend visite à Peter von Hess à Munich, qui travaille sur une fresque de la basilique Saint-Boniface.
En 1850, Cope expose « King Lear and Cordelia » à la RA et, en 1851, «The Sisters» et «Laurence Saunders's Martyrdom». En 1852, il peint le «Mariage de Griselda» et en 1853, «Othello relatant ses aventures à Dessdemona». La même année, il tombe gravement malade à cause d'une tumeur interne. En 1854, il expose «Les amis» et en 1855 «Prisonniers royaux». En 1856, il peint «L'embarquement d'une famille puritaine pour la Nouvelle-Angleterre» pour le couloir des pairs de la Chambre des Lords, qu'il remplace par la suite par une fresque. Le tableau principal est envoyé en Amérique et Cope est nommé membre honoraire de la Philadelphian Society of Arts.
En 1857, Cope expose Affronted et exécute une fresque de The Burial of Charles I dans le couloir des pairs (House of Lords). En 1858, il expose The Stepping Stones et, en 1859, un tableau représentant Cordelia recevant la nouvelle des mauvais traitements infligés à son père, ainsi que la fresque de The Parting of Lord and Lady William Russell dans le couloir des pairs.
En 1861, la fresque «Raising the Standard» a été placée dans le couloir des pairs. En 1862, il peint (en utilisant la «méthode du verre d'eau») la fresque de «La défense de Basing House» et, en 1863-64, celle de «L'expulsion des fellows d'Oxford pour avoir refusé de signer le Covenant». En 1865, il expose une étude de Fra Angelico à l'huile, ensuite exécutée en mosaïque à plus grande échelle au South Kensington Museum. Cette année-là, son grand portrait posthume du prince Albert est accroché dans la grande salle de la Society of Arts.
En 1865 et 1866, Cope réalise ses plus belles fresques à la Chambre des Lords: «Meeting of Train Bands to relieve the Siege of Gloucester» et «Speaker Lenthall asserting the Privileges of the Commons» (le président Lenthall affirmant les privilèges des Communes). En 1867, il est nommé professeur de peinture à la Royal Academy et donne six conférences par an jusqu'en 1875. En 1867, il peint également une troisième scène (au clair de lune) d'Othello (exposée en 1868). La femme de Cope, Charlotte, meurt en 1868.
Cope continue d'exposer à la Royal Academy jusqu'en 1882, son tableau le plus important de cette période étant The Council of the Royal Academy selecting Pictures for the Exhibition, présenté en 1876. La même année, il se rend en Amérique en tant que l'un des représentants de la RA à l'exposition du centenaire de Philadelphie.
En 1879, Cope épouse en secondes noces Eleanor Smart. Ils s'installent à Maidenhead dans le Berkshire (sur la Tamise). En 1883, il prend sa retraite en tant qu'artiste professionnel, tout en continuant à peindre pour son propre plaisir et en pratiquant la navigation de plaisance et le cyclisme. Il écrit son autobiographie, Reminiscences, qu'il achève en octobre 1889.

Marie Krøyer
Marie Triepcke Krøyer Alfvén (11 juin 1867 – 25 mai 1940) est une artiste peintre danoise.
Elle est principalement connue en tant que femme de Peder Severin Krøyer, l'un des membres les plus réputés de la colonie d'artistes les peintres de Skagen, qui s'est développée à la fin du XIXe siècle dans le nord du Danemark. Dès son plus jeune âge, Marie rêve d'être artiste, et après avoir reçu une éducation artistique dans une école privée à Copenhague (l'Académie étant fermée aux femmes), elle se rend à Paris pour continuer ses études. C'est là qu'elle rencontre Krøyer, début 1889, qui tombe immédiatement fou amoureux d'elle. Alors qu'il est son aîné de 16 ans, le couple se marie cet été-là et, en 1891, s'installe à Skagen. Très inspiré par la beauté de Marie, Krøyer réalise nombre de portraits de sa femme, en intérieur comme en extérieur, notamment sur la plage. La vie maritale devient plus difficile lorsque Krøyer passe par des épisodes de maladie mentale à partir de 1900, et Marie finit par avoir une liaison avec le compositeur suédois Hugo Alfvén, lui aussi emporté par sa beauté. Le couple a un enfant, Marie divorce et déménage en Suède avec Alfvén. Ils se marient en 1912, mais des problèmes du couple résulte à nouveau un divorce. Marie était réticente à peindre depuis sa rencontre avec Krøyer, qu'elle considérait comme bien plus talentueux. Elle est davantage connue en qualité de modèle de son mari que pour son propre travail, même si plusieurs de ses peintures ont récemment bénéficié d'un regain d'intérêt. Elle est aussi désormais reconnue pour ses contributions au design et à l'architecture. Certains de ses dessins n'ont été découverts qu'en 20022.
