Jules Bastien-Lepage
Jules Bastien, dit Jules Bastien-Lepage, né le 1er novembre 1848 à Damvillers et mort le 10 décembre 1884 à Paris, est un peintre et graveur naturaliste français.
Fils de Claude Bastien et de Catherine Adèle Lepage, Jules Bastien-Lepage naît à Damvillers, près de Verdun, dans un milieu modeste et humble de propriétaires terriens et de paysans. Il suit des études secondaires à Verdun au lycée Buvignier et, muni de son baccalauréat ès-sciences après une scolarité sans relief particulier, où il manifesta une timide vocation artistique, il arrive à Paris en 1867. Il entre à l'administration générale des Postes en tant que surnuméraire, ce qui lui laisse le temps de travailler le dessin. La situation n'est cependant pas glorieuse. À la même époque, il tente le concours de l'École des beaux-arts de Paris. Il ne sera pas reçu mais pourra fréquenter les cours en tant qu'aspirant. L'année suivante, il est admis dans l'atelier d'Alexandre Cabanel où il s'entraîne à dessiner. Le 20 octobre 1868, il est enfin reçu premier au concours et entre aux Beaux-Arts dans la section peinture ainsi que son ami Raphaël Collin. Commencent alors de nombreuses démarches pour l'allocation de bourses et aides financières diverses. Il débute au Salon de 1870 avec un portrait qui ne fut pas remarqué.
En 1873, il expose Au printemps et, en 1874, Mon Grand-père, tous deux particulièrement appréciés par les critiques. Il obtient une médaille de troisième classe pour le portrait de son grand-père au Salon de 18743. En 1875, l'Annonciation aux bergers lui permet d'être deuxième au grand prix de Rome. Il va hésiter entre deux directions : les thèmes traditionnels et ses goûts pour les scènes de la vie paysanne. Peintre de la vie rurale, il aime travailler près des paysans, les suivre dans leurs occupations quotidiennes. Viendront: Saison d'octobre, Le Père Jacques, L'Amour au village, Le Faucheur aiguisant sa faux, etc.
Pendant la décennie suivante, il exerce une grande influence sur les jeunes peintres, en France, dans toute l'Europe et en Amérique du Nord.
Dans le parc des Rainettes à Damvillers, alors vaste verger, il souhaite créer un atelier de plein air. Il y reçoit des personnalités, telles que le frère du roi de Serbie ou l'écrivain André Theuriet. Parallèlement, il fait une carrière de grand portraitiste par un travail qui rappelle la facture du réalisme flamand dans ses dimensions modestes et sa technique précise. Ce sont les portraits du prince de Galles, d'Albert Wolff, de Madame Godillot, de Juliette Drouet, de Sarah Bernhardt, etc.
Marie Bashkirtseff lui voue une admiration profonde. Il ne travaille guère plus de dix ans et, pourtant, il laisse une œuvre originale et innovante. Ses toiles figurent dans les plus grands musées du monde : Paris, Londres, New York, Moscou, Melbourne, Philadelphie… Il compte notamment parmi ses élèves Elena Samokich-Soudkovskaïa.
Jules Bastien-Lepage meurt le 10 décembre 18844 dans son atelier de la rue Legendre, dans le 17e arrondissement de Paris5, d'une tumeur cancéreuse placée entre l'abdomen et l'épigastre. Après sa mort, c'est son frère Émile qui donna au jardin des Rainettes son aspect de parc.
Le musée Jules Bastien-Lepage de Montmédy (Meuse) est consacré à son œuvre.

Une analyse du tableau de Bastien-Lepage par le critique Paul Mantz permet de mieux comprendre la complexité des réactions de l'époque devant ces images de moments de repos après des travaux pénibles : «Cette paysanne est un monument de sincérité, un type dont on se souviendra toujours. Elle est très hâlée par le soleil, elle est laide <…> Elle reprendra son dur travail, elle rentrera dans les fatalités de la vie réelle. Mais pendant cette rude journée, l'âme aura eu son entracte. De tous les tableaux du Salon, y compris les tableaux religieux, la composition de Bastien-Lepage est celle qui contient le plus de pensée».
«On prétend parfois», écrivent Patricia Carles et Béatrice Desgranges, «que Zola a «lâché » les impressionnistes, qu'il n'aurait pas compris, pour se tourner vers des peintres comme Bastien-Lepage, dont il reconnaît les talents de portraitiste dès 1876 et qui fut son ami.» Une lecture attentive des textes montre qu'il n'en est rien. Fidèle à sa méthode critique, qui constate et analyse les évolutions objectives de l'histoire de l'art plus qu'elle ne définit des règles, Zola montre comment Bastien-Lepage, formé par Cabanel, a inconsciemment subi l'influence «de la formule impressionniste» dont il consacre le triomphe en l'affadissant, en la mettant «adroitement » à la portée du public. Mais le succès de Bastien-Lepage milite contre le peintre aux yeux de Zola : les vraies personnalités sont toujours en butte à l'hostilité de «la foule». «Tous les créateurs ont rencontré au début de leur carrière une forte résistance, c'est une règle absolue, qui n'admet pas d'exception; mais lui on l'applaudit, mauvais signe...».

Hugo Fredrik Salmson
Hugo Fredrik Salmson (7 juillet 1843 - 1er août 1894) était un peintre suédois, connu pour ses personnages et ses scènes de genre.
Salmson est né à Stockholm, en Suède. Il est le fils de Fredrik Ludvig Salmson, grossiste, et de sa femme Maria Perlberg. Il a d'abord étudié le commerce, mais a rapidement opté pour une carrière artistique. En 1862, il commence ses études à l'Académie royale suédoise des beaux-arts, où il est formé par Johan Christoffer Boklund. Son tableau de Sten Sture le Jeune rencontrant Gustav Trolle dans la cathédrale d'Uppsala (1867) lui vaut une médaille royale et une bourse de voyage.
En 1868, il se rend à Paris, via Düsseldorf. Les classes de Léon Bonnat et d'Alexandre Cabanel n'ayant pas de places vacantes, il prend des cours particuliers auprès de Pierre-Charles Comte.
Il fait ses débuts au Salon de 1870 avec une scène de genre représentant un chalet en Dalécarlie, intitulée Révélation. Pendant la guerre franco-prussienne, il vit et travaille à Bruxelles. Il conserve un atelier à Paris jusqu'au début des années 1880 et se rend souvent en Picardie. À partir de 1883, Salmson passe généralement les étés à Dalby en Scanie.

Au cours de ses dernières années, Salmson a surtout peint des portraits à l'huile ou au pastel. Il est souvent reclus, ne communique pas et souffre de dépression. Il meurt en 1894 lors d'un séjour dans un hôtel de Lund.
Salmson est représenté au Nationalmuseum de Stockholm, au Gothenburg Art Museum, au Malmö Art Museum, au Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde, à l'université de Lund, au musée de Picardie, au musée d'Orsay, au musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, au Bergen City Museum et à la Corcoran Gallery of Art de Washington.

Ludwig Knaus
Ludwig Knaus (5 octobre 1829 - 7 décembre 1910) était un peintre de genre allemand de la jeune école de Düsseldorf.
Il est né à Wiesbaden et a étudié de 1845 à 1852 avec Sohn et Schadow à Düsseldorf. Ses premières œuvres, comme Les joueurs de la galerie de Düsseldorf, sont dans la lignée de cette école, avec des couleurs sombres et lourdes. Il remédie à cette lacune en étudiant à Paris, où il se rend en 1852 et s'inscrit comme élève de Thomas Couture. En 1853, son Matin d'après la Kermesse reçoit la deuxième médaille d'or du Salon et fait de lui un peintre célèbre. À l'exception d'une année d'études en Italie, il reste à Paris jusqu'en 1860.
Ses principales œuvres de cette période sont Les Noces d'or, Le Baptême et La Promenade, achetée pour le Luxembourg. De 1861 à 1866, il exerce à Berlin, produisant des œuvres telles que Boys Playing Cards, Looking for a Bride (musée de Wiesbaden) et His Highness on His Travels. Les huit années suivantes ont vu la production de la plupart de ses meilleures œuvres, notamment La fête des enfants (Galerie de la Nation, Berlin), Dans la grande détresse et Le prince du village. De 1874 à 1883, il est professeur à l'Académie royale prussienne de Berlin, où il résidera jusqu'à sa mort.

Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1910) était un paysagiste victorien né à Londres. Il a commencé sa vie d'adulte en tant qu'employé des chemins de fer. Peu d'informations existent pour expliquer quand et où il a reçu son intérêt et sa formation artistiques, mais en 1864, il a exposé sa première œuvre à la Royal Society of British Artists (Société royale des artistes britanniques), Morning on Grasmere Lake (Matin sur le lac Grasmere).
À partir de ce moment-là, il expose fréquemment à la Société, ainsi qu'à la Royal Academy (RA), où il expose sa première œuvre, A Cornfield - Kent, en 1865. Johann Baptist Reiter (28 mai 1813, Linz - 10 janvier 1890, Vienne) était un peintre autrichien de portrait et de genre de la période Biedermeier.
Son père était maître charpentier. Il passe trois ans en tant qu'apprenti dans l'entreprise de son père, où il peint des meubles, des enseignes et des croix. Encouragé par le lithographe et marchand d'art Josef Hafner, il s'inscrit à l'Académie des beaux-arts de Vienne. Il y suit notamment les cours de Leopold Kupelwieser et de Thomas Ender. Après 1830, il gagne essentiellement sa vie en tant que peintre sur porcelaine.
Probablement grâce à une recommandation de Kupelweiser, il obtient une bourse du Landstand de Haute-Autriche qui lui permet de poursuivre ses études de 1834 à 1837. Pendant cette période, il expose également et remporte le Lampi-Preis pour le dessin de modèle en 1836. Il se marie en 1839. À l'origine, il dessine des scènes de genre et des scènes historiques, mais il décide de passer au portrait et devient rapidement si populaire qu'il peut acheter une grande maison à Vienne avec une voiture à quatre chevaux et un Maure comme serviteur.

Joseph Clark
Joseph Clark (4 juillet 1834 - 4 juillet 1926) était un peintre à l'huile anglais, bien connu à l'époque victorienne pour ses scènes domestiques, notamment d'enfants.
